Class of...

The Mountain radio station has a segment called 9 @ 9. They either do nine songs from a certain year (and don't tell you the year until the end of the segment) or a theme. All listed here. They also talk about the news of that year and play soundbites from tv shows, movies, and events.
Today I could easily tell what year it was - the year I graduated from high school [or, as I sometimes think of it, the year I almost didn't graduate].

Since most of my blogger buddies are my age, I thought it would be fun to show them the songlist. Not only that, but they replay it again at 9pm, so if you have time and are reading this before 9pm on Monday, June 25th you can listen to the live stream on the website. I actually missed the first half myself. And he always picks "best of set." Can you guess which song a Seattle DJ would choose?

What I like about the list is that they don't do the Top 40 of that year, since they aren't a Top 40 station. It's pretty cool for a mainstream radio. They are the type that plays everything from Dar to The Doors to Nickel Creek to Snow Patrol to Led Zeppelin to Ziggy (both Marley & Stardust). Oh, and heard a certain Duke alum on the station during "Free Latte Fridays" when they went to Bothell.

I thought this would be a better list than what they played at the reunion - which seams ridiculous to play what the Top 10 songs were of that year since the time you hit your senior year, most are not listening to Top 40 any more.
I just remember hearing "Baby Got Back" over and over at the reunion. While a fine song alone, hearing it over and over while catching up with people I haven't seen in ten years, slightly annoying.

Oh, and NRK here does the 8 @ 8 that I listen to on the way in to work in the morning. They do some years but it is more often a theme and I can usually name it in two songs. They stumped me this morning with this group:

Depeche Mode 'Policy Of Truth'
Psychedelic Furs 'Pretty In Pink'
Smashing Pumpkins 'Today'
Cheap Trick 'Surrender'
Pearl Jam 'I Got Id'
Duran Duran 'Girls On Film'
The Breeders 'Cannonball'
Tears For Fears 'Shout'

The band I'm part of plays Barenaked Ladies' Brian Wilson in their set. Love it!

Did anyone else notice on the radio station's website that on June 19th (just 2 down) was the year we were born? Freaky, huh?

K: I'm going to guess songs that were in soundtracks... Actually I have no idea. What was it?

Spike: Actually, most of us were born the year after. PNW has an earlier cut off date for fall bdays than the MidWest.
