R.I.P. The Augie Doggie

To give a bit of back history for those of you who didn't go to Augie:
Our mascot is the Viking. So what did we have as a mascot at events? A dog. A person dressed up in a dog costume wearing an Augie jersey.
In the late seventies (or was it early 80's?) Augustana was losing at... well, every sport. In the attitude of 'make fun of yourself before someone else does' they came up with calling themselves The Augie Doggies. Standing for The Underdogs. This tradition was still going on in the 90's when I was there. Sometimes we even forgot that the Viking was our real mascot.
Sad to say, they are trying to phase the doggie out. The mascot has disappeared, not even the doghouse float in the parade. Yet if you scroll down a few entries, you will notice that the Holiday Inn greeted us as the Doggies.
So we asked what shows up at events now? Expecting to hear some sort of version of Ole the Viking, the answer was "nothing."
