Two television commercials have caught my attention this week. Both because of the pre-existing songs they used to advertise.
1. They are using a song from the anti-esteblishment rock musical Hair to advertise Minivans!! (Kia ones, I think). Kind of pisses me off the same way that they (Ralph Lauren?) took the anti-Vietnam war song "Fortunate Son" by CCR and made it sound like an American patriotic song by only playing the first few lines and cutting the rest.
2. This next one doesn't piss me off, it makes me laugh. Burger King is using Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" (the intro, no lyrics heard) for their new ad. The song about masturbation is being used to sell, of all things, a CHICKEN sandwich! Are there some thirty-something ad people who are laughing at the fact they got this past the corporate heads who are too unhip to know? Use a song about choking the chicken to sell chicken...
