Always Gets the RePlay

The Who's Tommy was the third CD I ever owned (I didn't get a CD player until college). I love it, know every line. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw it on our season list at the theatre. Everyone has been waiting in anticipation.
A lot of my favorite actors have been cast.

Tech-watch: crew watches a run-through in the rehearsal room to get familiar with the show. And for us crew to introduce ourselves to the cast.

Even with just a piano, Pinball Wizard totally rocked. It's the last song before intermission. We took a real intermission and visited with each other. KD noticed that, even in that well-lit room, everyone's pupils were now dilated.

Remember how I mentioned Listening to You is one of my favorite songs? In the show, they sing it for the finale. It starts out with one person singing and is slowly joined by more until over 20 people are singing it. And in this room, some of the cast was just a few feet in front of my face. It was AMAZING.

OHMYGODIMSOEXCITEDTOSEETHIS!

I'm glad I'm seeing it early in the run in case I need to come up again before it closes. Maybe I can bring Quinn for a road trip or something...

BTW this was one of my earlier CD purchases as well. Now if you try to buy it they make you pay for two discs.

I actually didn't buy it. Remember when Maxell blank tapes had points for every cassette you bought? I had enough points to get a free CD and I picked Tommy.

I was a big Who fan in college and bought every album (as they came out - on LPs - still have them too - which tells you how old I am) but never really understood Tommy until I saw it put on by a local middle school group last year and they really nailed it. (They had to work around the censor with "smoking mother nature" and "fiddling about" but it still came off as a great play.)

The finale with "I get the feeling" was so good that I was humming it for weeks afterwards.

I saw the movie (with Ann-Margaret) shortly thereafter and it was just awful. Music was weak and the story line was chopped up so that it made no sense.

If I were in the Seattle area I'd be there for your opening but alas I am still in Florida (but moving to Orcas Island in two years).

Ah, the Orcas Island explains how you found my blog. Wow, to actually live there... you lucky duck!
We do run until middle of July - so please come if you are visiting Washington this summer.

As far as the Tommy plot, when people ask me about it, I always have to end it with: "written by guys who did a lot of drugs in the 60's." And with all musicals, "don't look for the plot to make much sense."

It's interesting to see what jr & high schools do with musicals that have "adult content." I saw a great high school production of "Hair" - but no nudity and every 'motherfuckin' became 'motherlovin'
But was surprised that the jr. high left in "The Connuptial Dance of Spousal Arousal" in their version of "Starmites."

Yes, I found your blog from your Orcas entries which I really enjoyed so have been lurking for a while.

We might just make it. Plans are to take my stepson's girlfriend who is an architect out to look at the site in June.
