So why write about this one? Because no one seems to even know it. And it's one of my favorites. This isn't a review, but just a "here's a good one to watch."
Last month I was waiting to find a cheap price of the DVD on eBay. While in line to purchase clothes at Value Village, I saw a VHS copy sitting right on top of the pile of videos. $2. Double bonus: my DVD player had stopped working anyways.
The hardest part about telling people the plot is: there is a secret. And I don't want to give it away. Yet it isn't all just about the secret. And when you tell people the plot without the secret, it sounds so boring.
But I'll try anyways.
Mumford is a small town. Mumford is also the name of the new popular psychologist who moved to the town four months ago, played by Loren Dean . [He played Joe in "Say Anything" - the guy that Lily Taylor's character kept writing songs about]. Through his sessions you get to find out a little bit about all the characters in Mumford. It has a lot of my favorites in it. Jason Lee plays a dot.commer CEO, when his acting was just starting to improve. He even gets to show off his skateboarding skills, as that was his career before acting. Alfre Woodard as Doc Mumford's landlady. Zooey Deschanel as a rebellious teen. Hope Davis. Someone described her as 'absolutely adorable' in this and I concur. And a slew of others, some well-known and some not.
It's written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. You may recognize that name from other little unknowns, such as The Empire Strikes Back.
And for you old school Blazer fans, there is a small tribute to Danny Ainge.
Go check it out and let me know what you thought of it. I'll wait here.

I saw it a few years ago and loved it. I should rent it again, though, because I don't even remember the secret now!
Oh, and Joe Lies is the name of someone's band on my favorite show (which is no longer on the air); I love that.
But even more, I love the Kasdans! Father and son, both. Jake directed one of my most favorite movies, Zero Effect.
Mmm... old school Blazers...
Where's Jerome Kersee when we need him?
Netflixed...
~n: Now I have one to watch. Just put Zero Effect on hold at the library (like Netflix, only free).
Q: Were you aware that Kersey has been teaching the new younger Blazers how to be gentlemen? (seriously).
I rented Mumford back in the day to see what Lawrence Kasdan was up to if he wasn't writing the new Star Wars movies. (Looking back, and knowing what we know now, you can tell that he must have written Han Solo's lines.)
I was a little weirded out by the last third (in which you learn what Loren Dean's character did in the past), but it was an okay ensemble movie.
For a much better movie with Loren Dean, try Gattaca.
I recall liking Kim Dickens in Zero Effect but I remember next to nothing about the movie.
Glad to see Julie is a fellow subscriber to the local, free version of Netflix.
