Today Babi turns 89!
And who is Babi? For those of you who know Czech, you have already figured out that she is my grandmother. Translated babi means grandma. The picture above was taken in a photo booth when she was 18.
She was born Adella Kortan (later changed to Della) and raised in a Bohemian community in South Dakota. She moved to Oregon where she met another South Dakotan (a Norwegian-American), Harvey. They got married in Fort Lewis, Washington right before he shipped off for war in the Pacific. The couple had five kids, the oldest being my mum.
Harvey and Della raised their kids in Eugene, Oregon. They owned a few restaurants, most well known is The College Side Inn ("The Side") at U of O (now the bookstore).
Babi still lives in Eugene and is very active in her community. She has many hobbies - and seems to be adding more all the time. Crocheting, tatting, painting, sewing, cooking, and gardening are just a few. I learned how to crochet from her. And this Czech-American is also the person who made my traditional Norwegian costume.

Some of my grandparents own children didn't go to U of O!
Mum waited until her Masters to go there.
I showed Babi your blog and she was speachless.
Mum
Is that a good thing?
