Last weekend I went to the Women of Faith Conference at The Rose Garden. It was a good experience and a lot of laughs. I got to meet one of my favorite authors, Luci Swindoll.
I had been complaining since college that there was not many books/devotionals for single Christian women. It went straight from teenager to married with a family. The rest of us get left behind. Then Mum lent me one of Luci's books-on-tape, "Tell Me!" A single woman, about in her 60's, has had diverse careers, and lots of crazy adventures. She gets into the same kind of trouble that I seem to stumble into. My favorite story (which I won't tell here - you'll just have to hear/read it or call me) involves try to get a Hearse out of hawk from the cop station at 3am on her birthday. And then I got "The Best of..." her devotional book. My copy is well worn. I just love her humor and attitude.
I was telling one of my single friends about Luci, starting of saying "she's single and..." My friend rolled her eyes and commented on the obnoxious, "don't worry, you can still lead a full life even if you are single" pity-rant. I said it's nothing like that. It's just that I can relate to her more than I can with the authors who talk about their husbands and kids. Singleness really isn't a focus.
I should explain that I have been very busy the last few months, working three jobs (blogging on breaks). I made some comment at the convention that someday I would be able to sit and eat. So I was standing in line to see her latest books and eating a large pretzel when I got a call from a client. Trying to balance everything in my hands, I got out of line to take the call. Coming back in line, looking at which book to buy, I decided that "Notes to a Working Woman" would be the one for me. I also managed to get one of the very last copies of "Tell Me!" and "Tell Me More!" on CD (she's signing it in the picture).
There were other speakers I really enjoyed. Patsy Clairmont is a kick! And I won't forget Tammy Trent's story (or her last name) anytime soon. Or the story of Beverly Johnson and the other Beverly Johnson who took her phone calls. Some amazing stories.
Did you know that laughter is the only thing that can excercise your liver?

I don't know, Julie... I've been told that a lot of alcohol over the years can give your liver quite the workout.
